PSHE

Intent

At Brunel Field Primary School, we teach PSHE to provide opportunities for children to grow as people of the world, whether that world is their local or global community. We believe that encouraging children to develop to be inclusive, understanding, fair and kind people, with a strong moral compass and a positive, non-judgmental approach to life will allow them to contribute positively to the wonderfully rich, diverse world we live in. We also strongly believe in nurturing their physical and mental health, helping them understand how to keep themselves and others safe and well in all aspects of their world, including when ‘on-line’, as well as developing their emotional literacy, building their resilience, confidence and independence, preparing them to thrive in life. Along with our Core Learning Skills and school values, PSHE learning at Brunel Field aims to help children develop in the short and long term, improving their understanding of themselves and the wonderful, diverse and ever-changing world around them.

Implementation

The PSHE curriculum we teach at Brunel Field uses ‘Jigsaw 3-11’, which includes the statutory Relationships and Health Education, in a spiral and progressive scheme, giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others. Jigsaw consists of six half-term units of work (Puzzles), each containing six lessons (Pieces) covering each academic year.

▪ Term 1: Being Me in My World

▪ Term 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)

▪ Term 3: Dreams and Goals

▪ Term 4: Healthy Me

▪ Term 5: Relationships

▪ Term 6: Changing Me (including Relationships and Sex Education)

Every Piece has two Learning Intentions, one specific to Relationships and Health Education (PSHE) and the other designed to develop emotional literacy and social skills. The lessons then split into 6 parts, all of which should be included in every session to ensure that the learning follows the optimum progression. They include opportunities for beginning with a ‘Connect us’; a game or activity to build and maximise social skills, fostering positive relationships and collaborative learning, a section of ‘Calm me’; helping children relax and encouraging reflection and spiritual development, ‘Open my mind’; allowing children to focus and concentrate on their learning, ‘Tell me or show me’ and ‘Let me learn’ activities; introduce and explore new information, concepts and skills, finishing with ‘Help me reflect’; giving the opportunity to think through their personal response to the lesson. In addition to the Jigsaw scheme, learning at Brunel Field also focuses on other important aspects of children’s personal, social, health and economic education, including encouraging and understanding, celebrating and promoting diversity during Black History Month, building skills in online safety and other crucial elements of safeguarding children, both in the short and long term.
