Science

Intent

At Brunel Field Primary school, we encourage creative scientific thinking placing emphasis on open-ended enquiry-based learning and research. We want our children to be naturally curious about the world around them and we have developed our curriculum to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum that fosters a sense of wonder about natural phenomena. At Brunel Field, we ensure that our curriculum includes a diverse representation of scientists to enable children to identify with a range of aspirational figures and see themselves as scientists.

Implementation

The National Curriculum identifies three key areas in which children should be taught; knowledge and understanding; working scientifically and the application of science. Throughout the school, children are encouraged to develop and use a range of working scientifically skills including:

• Asking questions,

• Planning and setting up different types of experiments,

• Performing tests,

• Reporting, presenting and communicating data and their findings,

• Observing and measuring,

• Identifying and classifying,

• Gathering and recording data,

• Using equipment.

We are committed to providing a stimulating, engaging and challenging learning environment within which they can develop these skills. We value the importance of fieldwork in order to provide children with opportunities to apply the above skills in a practical setting. We intend to provide all children, regardless of ethnic origin, gender, class, aptitude or disability with a broad and balanced science curriculum. Our science curriculum includes a diverse representation of scientists to enable children to identify with a range of aspirational figures and see themselves as scientists. The science curriculum at Brunel Field enables children to develop knowledge and skills which are transferable to and carefully linked with other curriculum areas such as Geography, Maths and History. At the end of key stage 2, children begin to review their science learning over the key stage and categorise these topics into Chemistry, Physics and Biology in preparation for the Key Stage 3 curriculum. Our children at Brunel Field are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
