Phonics
At Brunel Field we use the Unlocking Letters and Sounds (ULS) Phonics scheme- a systematic synthetic phonics programme which follows the progression of the 2007 Letters and Sounds framework, with the addition of some KS1 National Curriculum objectives.
Through ULS children will learn the 150+ graphemes that are represented by the 44 phonemes of the English language along with common exception words (CEWs) in a planned, progressive way. This is achieved through daily phonics lessons, reading practice using fully decodable books matched to the child’s phonic knowledge and daily handwriting practice.
The teachers will teach the children each sound with a corresponding action. The sound 's' for example, is taught by making the gesture of a snake to help the children to remember the corresponding sound. When the children write in school we will ask them to sound out a word and then find the sounds on the sound mat by looking for the corresponding image e.g. a picture of a snake. When supporting your children at home, please reference these actions. Below you can find the links to the Phase 2 and Phase 3 sound mats, along with links where you can hear the sounds correctly modeled.
