Sustainability
At Brunel Field Primary School, we are committed to educating our children about environmental concerns and the importance of living sustainably. We recognise our responsibility to ensure that pupils have the necessary skills and knowledge to understand environmental concerns so that they can apply this to their lives and adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle.
We encourage both pupils, staff and the wider community to think about the environment and how their actions will impact their local surroundings and those more globally. As well as adopting the Zero Carbon Schools curriculum in Year 5, staff have received climate change training from Zero Carbon Schools and are committed to systemic change in a move towards being carbon zero.
We work very closely with our PSA which has two designated Eco Reps to consider and advise on the impact of projects and events on our environment. The PSA is pivotal in organising our annual ECO Week where we invite guest speakers to talk to children about their interests and/or jobs related to sustainability and climate change. The week also involves community activities such as litter picking and plant sales.
Our journey to net zero
We are proud to announce that we have joined Zellar, a sustainability platform that makes it easy for organisations to bridge the gap between climate ambition and action.
Brunel Field recognises the importance of taking responsibility for its own environmental impact and is committed to embedding long-term sustainable practices into its operations. Zellar's innovative approach tackles the barriers to climate action by breaking it down into three clear steps that make sustainability simple, engaging and fun:
- Missions help us to understand our impact across energy, water and waste.
- We can set about reducing our impact with Rituals that embed simple habits to conserve resources.
- Projects support us to identify key areas which will lead to systemic changes.
We receive our own Zellar Score which rates our sustainability progress and a live Zellar Profile, that records our activity – whether it’s switching to pure green energy, reducing our emissions, making sustainable operational improvements or offsetting carbon.
Through the Zellar platform, we have calculated our building emissions and consumption as well as taken an oversight of other areas such as food and transport which all contribute to the carbon footprint of our organisation. Zellar is supporting Brunel Field to put in place achievable plans to reduce the carbon emissions in every aspect of our school community with the ultimate goal of becoming net zero.
